Biography

Born in Edinburgh, Tom Kitchin attended Dollar Academy, a boarding school in Dollar, Clackmannanshire. After leaving school, he studied catering at Perth College before beginning an apprenticeship at the Gleneagles Hotel, near Auchterarder, Perth and Kinross. He has worked with Pierre Koffmann, Alain Ducasse and Guy Savoy, all of whom have been awarded three Michelin stars.   In January 2007 he was awarded his first Michelin star, after The Kitchin had been in business for only six months, making him Scotland’s youngest Michelin starred chef proprietor, aged only 29. Albert Roux is reported to have said that Tom is the chef in Scotland most likely to win three Michelin stars. His cooking style is to combine French techniques with seasonal Scottish ingredients, a style discussed in depth in his 2010 book From Nature to Plate.   Since then the restaurant and Chef Tom have received nationwide recognition with a number of accolades and awards including Best UK Restaurant in the Square Meal Awards (2011), Observer Food Monthly Restaurant of the Year (2010), Four AA Rosettes (2010), AA Wine Award Scotland (2010), No. 2 in UK top 100 Best Restaurants by Eat Out Magazine (2009), a Caterer & Hotelkeeper (Catey) award for ‘UK Newcomer of the Year’ (2008) and ‘Restaurant of the Year, Scotland’ at the AA Centenary Awards (2008).   In July 2010, Chef Tom and the team behind The Kitchin launched Castle Terrace Restaurant with Chef Patron Dominic Jack.  Located in the city centre, Castle Terrace Restaurant uses the same From Nature to Plate philosophy as sister restaurant, The Kitchin.     Tom has become well-known on television, having appeared on BBC’s Saturday Kitchen, UKTV Food’s Market Kitchen and in BBC2’s successful series, The Great British Menu. Tom has since joined the Mastercef Final Chef’s table on a few occasions, with some of the UK’s most renowned chefs.
